THe big switch on at an array of solar panels next to the line near Aldershot Railway Station. This innovative project is the first in the UK to power the railway with electricity generated from solar power and, if successful, could see many Network Rail sites across the country adapting this sustainable energy approach. Riding Sunbeams is a social enterprise, run by 10:10 Climate Action. Built with Community Energy South and partnered with Network Rail and The Department for Transport and by InnovateUK. Aldershot, Hampshire, United Kingdom. Riding Sunbeams is a world leading project to connect solar panels directly into electrified rail routes to power the trains. Direct supply of solar power to rail traction systems has never been done. But it has huge potential - from metros, trams and railways in the UK and around the world.
