The Folkestone Leas Lift carriages being lifted by crane off the tracks and onto the back of a lorry to go off for restoration on the 27th of February 2025 in Folkestone, United Kingdom. The Grade II* Listed funicular railway, which closed in 2016, is being brought back to life by Apex contractors after a fundraising campaign raised £6.7 million to get it back into use. The Leas Lift charity intends to restore and then maintain and operate the Leas lift for the benefit of the local community and visitors to the town to preserve this historic water powered cliffside funicular railway. A funicular is a type of cable railway systems specifically used for steep slopes, the two carriages are attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable that move synchronously: as one ascends, the other descends at an equal speed.
