• Luke Noakes, a Folkestone based fisherman out trawling for a 12 hour night shift on a fishing trip in his boat Valentine (FE20), Hythe Bay, the English Channel, UK.

Luke is a 3rd generation fisherman, his man activity is trawling. Folkestone was founded on its fishing industry which dates back to pre-Roman times. During its heyday there were over 100 boats operating out of the busy harbour and employing over 1000 people in the town. However today, there are only 8 working boats left, employing just over 20 people. The boats are owned and managed by Folkestone families who have a strong fishing heritage.

 • I’ve been a resident here on St. Matthews in Leicester for the past 14 years. I’ve come to the realisation that if this money is coming to the estate, then I should, as a resident and as a worker on the estate, should actually help the decision process in terms of how this money can be utilised. And that's how, initially, I came on-board. The Big Local has different set of priorities every couple of years. Some of them are environments, some of them are community activities, some of them are education, some of them are cultural programmes. Most of the work we do is related to training and skill enhancement. The estate is majority-populated by young children, we need to get them early on, to either go towards the direction of education or gaining skills. Mohammed Artan, local resident, volunteer and former vice chair. St Matthews Big Local, Leicester. UK.

 • I’m the vice chair in the Big Local, I organise events and workshops. One of the ones I’m most proud of was the first aid course. We also did the health and wellbeing, and the women's group. The main two communities are the Somalian community and the British community. The Big Local was a great opportunity to get more integration, I wanted both communities to integrate, that was my whole purpose of getting involved. I came up with the idea of having a women's group, a women's café because I thought it was ideal, there was nothing really going on for the women. I wanted the women to have a voice, for them to speak up, have a say what they think, if they wanted to go on a trip we could organise it. The cafe was the only time that they can really talk and say "Yeah, let's go girls.” after the first one you could see a difference in the whole community straight away. Sumaya Bihi, vice chair of St Matthews Big Local, Leicester. UK.

 • Lubaina Himid has created a Jelly Mould Pavilion on Folkestone’s sea front, on the former ‘Rotunda’ site of the town’s fun fair, Lido and amusement park where the sugar of candy floss and toffee apples fuelled summer visitors. The pavilion’s colourful decoration in the artist’s signature patterning will serve as a reminder of the lost amusement park, as well as providing a beautiful shelter at the edge of the town to rest, look out to sea, and think about the role of sugar in Britain’s history. Part of the 2017 Folkestone Triennial, Folkestone, Kent.
